Manufacturing Methods

Two common bottle manufacturing methods include injection blow molding and extrusion blow molding. These processes help design hollow parts, including bottles and other products.

Injection Blow Molding

Injection blow molding involves heating and melting glass or plastic material and then injecting it into a mold to create a preformed parison. Air is then blown into the parison, allowing it to expand and conform to the shape of the mold cavity. Once cooled, the finished product is ejected and removed from the mold. While this method is not as popular as extrusion blow molding, it’s a suitable method for producing small, hollow objects such as soda bottles.

Extrusion Blow Molding

Extrusion blow molding involves first using an extruder to create a hollow tube, or parison. The two mold halves are then closed around the parison. Next, air is directed into the parison, causing it to expand and conform to the shape of the mold cavity. Once the product is cooled, it can be removed from the mold for further processing. Features such as weight, thickness, and wall distribution can be controlled by altering the parison and tooling.
