There are many substances in your home that are dangerous when they’re not used as directed. Also called “special packaging,” this type of packaging is designed to be extremely difficult for a child under the age of five to open—without posing a challenge to a typical adult. Child-resistant packaging shouldn’t interfere with the integrity, shelf-life, or quality of a product, nor should it make the product more difficult to store safely. A common example is the push-and-turn or the squeeze-and-turn cap that is often used on pill bottles. Children under the age of five typically lack the strength, dexterity, and coordination required to open a bottle with those types of caps.
What Products Require Child-Resistant Packaging?
Child-resistant packaging regulations, as introduced by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act (PPPA), require a variety of products to be sold in special packaging. As a general rule, anything that could harm a child if opened and ingested or applied topically will be in child-resistant packaging. The list includes the following:
- Aspirin
- Ibuprofen
- Prescription drugs
- Nutritional supplements
- Furniture polish
- Turpentine
- Lighter fluid
- Mouthwash
- Solvents
- And more
Some products may have to meet size or ingredient type or amount thresholds before they require child-resistant packaging. For example, products containing 10% or more by weight of ethylene glycol require child-resistant packaging. If a liquid-only has 5% by weight of that particular ingredient, it would not require special packaging.
